How does this benefit Inferno players that are selected to be on the Academy team?

It provides an avenue within the club for players that have aspirations to play at a higher level and desire more training and competition. It also gives us access to other development opportunities for players and staff through USL W League, Gainbridge Super League, additional workshops and events. Read the official announcement on Lancaster Inferno FC joining the USL Academy HERE.

How long is the program?

The USL Academy team will operate from the end of high school season through the end of June/July (depending on league schedule).

What does league play & other events consist of?

The USL Academy league season will run from April-July for the 2026 spring/summer season and will consist of 6 or more games.  We attend nationally ranked showcases and events to increase player exposure.

How will the players be selected?

The selection process will include the tryout evaluation, discussions with current Inferno coaches, attendance, character, and other intangibles. Additional clinics may be held throughout the year as needed and will be open to area players.

What age do players have to be to try out for the team?

The team will be composed of players in the U15 – U19 age group per the USL Academy guidelines. For the 2026-2027 season, birth years 2008-2012 are eligible.

How is the training different from the other teams in the club?

The USL Academy team will train 3 days per week from the end of High School to the end of June/July. Sessions will include strength training, recovery sessions, film sessions, speed and agility, technical training, and classroom instruction. The periodization process will be utilized to ensure players are provided with the appropriate rest, prevent overtraining, and ensure each player has what’s needed to find success on and off the field.  Our additional dedicated staff members and access to trainers provides players with specific development and support assistance.

Can players still play for their high school soccer team?

Yes.

Is the cost comparable to other Academy programs?

Yes, and players will have additional benefits such as access to trainers, additional video breakdown sessions and developmental support. USL offers regional competition to keep travel costs as low as possible.

Who will coach this team?

Wendell Hannaford has been appointed Head Coach. Additional members of the staff include Strength & Conditioning Coach Chris Weibel and Goalkeeper Coaches Thomas “Goose” Gosselin & Troy Billingslea.
