On Saturday, June 22nd, Lancaster Inferno was scheduled to play Montgomery Soccer Inc (MSI) at 3:00PM at the Turf Field at Warwick High School. Due to the intense heat index, the game was rescheduled to 10:00AM instead of 3:00PM, as suggested by Penn Medicine Sports Medicine.
In order to protect the players as much as possible, the heat continued to be monitored by the officials and medical staff throughout the match. As the game progressed and the heat intensified, the officials made the decision at the 70th minute to allow unlimited substitutions to help prevent heatstroke.
Even at 10:00AM, you could feel the heat but it didn’t stop the players who game out strong on both sides of the pitch. But after about 10 minutes, Lancaster Inferno’s shooting barrage began and five goals were scored in the first half.
12′ – #31 Lydia Gable
15′ – #15 Lillian Young
39′ – #13 Laken Merchant (assisted by #30 Addisyn Martin)
41′ – #30 Addisyn Martin (assisted by #6 Emily Wertz)
44′ – #11 Jessica Williamson (assisted by #30 Addisyn Martin)
Inferno’s U23 team headed into halftime with an impressive 5-0 lead. In the second half of the game, Inferno continued their onslaught of goals.
#31 Lydia Gable started things off in the second half with a goal at 48′ with an assist from #14 Eva Stoessel.
Stoessel would score again at the 54 minute mark off a beautiful cross from #6 Emily Wertz.
Four minutes later, Wertz assisted again, this time passing to #15 Lillian Young.
The excitement intensified along with the heat when #30 Addisyn Martin had a breakaway around the 77th minute. She took the ball all the way from the Inferno’s 18 to score the team’s 9th goal.
The final goal of the match took place just a few minutes later when #4 Lily Heistand put another ball in the net at the 80 minute mark.
The final score was Lancaster Inferno U23 10, MSI 0. It was the second UWS League 2 match as well as the second win.
#2 Delayney Bittner was named Lusk & Associates Sotheby’s International Realty’s Player of the Match.
Lancaster Inferno U23 is due to play MSI again on their turf on Saturday, June 29th.
